The inception of Eicher and its subsequent transformation from a family run business to a professionally run organization is one such tale that has continued to inspire entrepreneurs in the business landscape. In 1948, the Goodearth Company was set-up to sell and service imported tractors in India. Slowly and steadily, the company started gaining traction in the Indian market and over the years, grew strong enough to undertake the manufacturing of tractors in India itself. Thus the Eicher Tractor Corporation of India Pvt. Ltd. was established, on April 24, 1959, in technical collaboration with the reputed Gebr. Eicher of Germany.

The consistent efforts of Eicher towards indigenous manufacture of tractors were rewarded on September 3, 1960, when Eicher rolled out India’s first indigenously built tractor from its Faridabad factory. Today the Eicher Group stands tall as a significant player in the Indian automobile industry with a gross sales turnover of over INR 19,000 million (424 USD Mn) in the year 2005-06. The Group has diversified and entered into the growth areas of Customised Engineering Solutions, Automotive Components, Publications and Lifestyle.

When Vikram Lal, the second generation inheritor, took over the reins in 1975, a phenomenal attitude change was ushered in the organization. The way he juggled professional approach towards work with the adaptability for change to meet the market needs, gradually culminated into an established value. Over the years, his vision has transformed the family run business into a professional conglomerate, laying a firm foundation for a vibrant, growth oriented work culture evident today in the group companies – Eicher Motors Limited and Eicher Goodearth Limited.
